In a world of magic and monsters, there is no end to the list of predators the average farmer has to contend with. In addition to the usual suspects, such as wolves, bears, and large cats, there are also roving goblin bands, fence-smashing giants, and barn-torching dragons, just to name a few. Of all of these, none have inspired as much fear and revulsion as the Chupacabras.
Bizarre Bloodhunter. At first glance, the Chupacabras might be mistaken for a kobold or lizardfolk thanks to its scaly body and short stature. Large, black eyes provide it with the ability to identify prey in the dead of night, and sharp claws allow it to cut and tear as needed. A perpetual grin reveals the Chupacabras’ most important asset, its fangs. A single bite is powerful enough to punch a hole through the flesh of most creatures, after which the Chupacabras battens down to suck their victim’s blood and organs until nothing but a husk remains.
Goat-Sucker. While the Chupacabras rarely seeks human prey, that fact provides little comfort for the farmers and ranchers who have had to deal with the monster’s presence. In a single night, the Chupacabras is capable of decimating entire herds of pigs, sheep, goats, or cattle, while also making time to snack on the family dog or the neighbor’s cat.
The Chupacabras avoids confrontations with creatures more powerful than itself whenever possible. It conducts its nightly attacks through stealth and cunning, and by the time the slaughter is discovered, the monster has already retreated to its den. When forced into a defensive position, the chupacabras is a terror, lashing out at anything that moves while desperately seeking a means of escape.
Arcane Origins. It is said the Chupacabras’s origins can be traced back to the laboratory of a long forgotten wizard. In some versions of the tale, the monster was the result of a series of diabolical experiments designed to produce the ultimate hunter. Others insist the Chupacabras was brought to the Material Plane via a portal to a distant alien world.
